Notes: Also wood engraving block.; As previously thought, this block in the Hunt Institute collection is not the same as published at the head of the preface in volume 1 of Bewick’s History of British Birds. There are slight variations in the curve of a branch at the bottom, proximity of the foliage at the bottom of the nest, and a shallower, visible interior to the wall of nest. Also the published print from this block is in the opposite horizontal orientation. Bewick expert Iain Bain states that Thomas Bewick’s apprentice Charlton Nesbit (1775–1838) is the engraver of the published image. The Institute’s block is the same as the printed image represented in Julia Boyd Bewick Gleanings, noting that it was in her collection. Perhaps, apprentice copied image from original Bewick block used in volume 1 of A History of British Birds.
