Notes: Quotation from Dr. W. T. Stearn in letter of 22 August 1984 from Ms. A. Pope, Botany Library, British Museum (Natural History): ''It is certainly unpublished, and, having been drawn by James Sowerby was probably intended originally to be the first plate of Sertum Anglicum but then suppressed. The plant concerned was named Taxus elongata in Aiton's Hortus kewensis 3: 415 (1789) and Sowerby's illustration may well have been made from the type plant grown at Kew and introduced in 1774. L'Heritier's generic name Podocarpus and the specific P. elongatus were published by Persoon after L'Heritier's death ...'' Similar in style to Redouté's engravings of ''Ceanothus'' (accession no. 5454), ''Chrysanthemum'' (accession no. 5458), ''Hemitomus'' (accession no. 5455) and ''Salvia'' (accession nos. 5456 and 5457).
