Notes: The native Antiguan John Tyley worked as a botanical illustrator from 1793 to 1800 for the Scotsman Alexander Anderson during his tenure as superintendent of the King’s Botanical Garden of St. Vincent (1785 to 1811). Although many of the Institute’s collection of 51 Tyley watercolors are unsigned and undated, they are painted on laid and wove papers manufactured in England with watermarks dated 1794 (J Whatman); Curteis and Sons (no date), fleur de lis (no date) and I Taylor (1804).
