Notes: ''Magnolia grandiflora. The woods of Carolina and Florida are scented for three or four months by these beautiful and lightly fragrant blossoms which are succeeded by the glittering capsules - the scarlet seeds do not fall at once but hang suspended by threads, - the trees attain an immense size - The Wampum snake is named from its resemblance to the Indian money or wampum formed of pieces of shells strung together alternately blue and white - the bite of this snake is not at all venomous, but it devours birds and small animals and sometimes attains 5 or 6 feet in length - E. B. once killed one exactly like that here represented in. [sic] Both were copies from Catesby's Carolina lent me by Mrs. Neilson. Octr. 1832.'' A similar note is handwritten on another page. On separate page: ''I intend this portfolio of drawings for my son Edward James Bury together with the 2nd vol. of my drawings of lilies, one printed copy of my ''Hexandrian Plants'' and the small vol. of drawings made for ''The botanist. Priscilla Susan Bury. March 1847. Thus each son will have (3 large and 1 small) 4 vols. of his mother's drawings.'' (rev.)
